The investigation into the tragic loss of 4-year-old Caleb Flax in Charlotte, North Carolina, has taken a major step forward, with four teenagers now facing serious charges and investigators revealing new details about what happened during the early-morning shooting.
Caleb was inside his family’s home on Grassy Patch Lane when gunfire erupted shortly before 3 a.m. on September 20.
According to court documents, two vehicles arrived in the neighborhood carrying seven armed individuals. Investigators say the group opened fire toward multiple homes before leaving the area.
At least 84 rounds were fired into four occupied residences and three parked vehicles, according to documents obtained by local media.
Caleb was struck while inside his home. An adult in another residence was also seriously injured but survived.
The young boy was taken to Levine Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased roughly four hours after the shooting, according to investigators.
For his family, the incident has been especially painful because Caleb was only 4 years old and had recently started preparing for school.
His mother, Bryanna Flax, later described the terrifying moment when the gunfire erupted.
She said Caleb had been beside her when the shooting began and that she tried to protect him.
His grandfather, Brian Beatty, remembered Caleb as a child whose smile could brighten a room.
The community has since gathered for memorial events honoring the little boy and supporting his family.
But while relatives have been mourning, investigators have been working to reconstruct exactly what happened that morning.
And over the past several days, the investigation has produced a series of arrests.

FOUR TEENS NOW FACE MURDER CHARGES
Police announced that four teenagers — Ar’montae Johnson, 16, Antonio Ladson, 17, Jaylen Vontae Barber, 16, and Ian Garland, 17 — have been arrested in connection with the case.
All four are being charged as adults.
Authorities say the teenagers face murder charges as well as allegations involving attempted murder, shooting into occupied properties and conspiracy. The exact combination of additional charges varies by suspect.
The arrests came after detectives spent days examining vehicles, phone data, surveillance footage and information obtained through interviews.
One of the first major clues came from a stolen Mercedes-Benz.
According to investigators, an iPhone belonging to Johnson had previously been connected to the vehicle’s infotainment system. Police were able to use that information to connect Johnson to the stolen Mercedes.
Investigators say Johnson later told them that he had driven the Mercedes to an Airbnb gathering on September 19, the evening before the shooting.
According to court documents, he told detectives that people at the gathering wanted to “shoot at windows as retaliation for another shooting.”
Police allege Johnson knowingly handed over the vehicle’s keys even though he knew members of the group were carrying firearms.
That information helped detectives begin putting together the events leading up to the shooting.

WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE GUNFIRE?
According to investigators, the two vehicles eventually left the area of the Airbnb.
One was a stolen Mercedes-Benz, while the other was a stolen Infiniti.
The vehicles traveled toward the neighborhood where Caleb lived.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured one of the vehicles stopping for gas shortly after midnight.
Then, shortly before 3 a.m., investigators say both vehicles arrived on Grassy Patch Lane.
The headlights were reportedly turned off.
According to court documents, seven armed individuals got out of the vehicles and began firing toward the homes.
Four occupied residences were struck.
Three parked vehicles were also hit.
Investigators say at least 84 rounds were fired.
Traffic-camera footage later captured the vehicles leaving the area.
The suspects allegedly abandoned the vehicles and returned to an Airbnb gathering in a Jeep.

HOW POLICE CONNECTED THE SUSPECTS
The investigation did not rely on a single piece of evidence.
Detectives examined the abandoned Mercedes and discovered a handgun magazine inside.
Police also reviewed digital information connected to the vehicle.
The iPhone connection helped investigators identify Johnson, while statements from Johnson and Barber allegedly pointed investigators toward Garland as another person connected to the Mercedes.
Garland, 17, was arrested on September 30.
Another important development involved Ladson.
According to investigators, detectives obtained a search warrant for his residence and recovered a Glock 27 containing ammunition that authorities said was consistent with ammunition recovered during the investigation.
Ladson was subsequently arrested and charged.
As more evidence was assembled, the investigation expanded from one suspect to a larger group allegedly connected to the shooting.

A FIFTH ARREST ADDS ANOTHER LAYER
The case also resulted in the arrest of 22-year-old Terrance Jackson Jr.
Unlike the four teenagers, Jackson is not accused of participating in the shooting itself.
Instead, investigators allege that he became involved afterward.
According to an arrest affidavit, Johnson contacted Jackson after the shooting about a stolen Infiniti that had been abandoned.
Police allege that Jackson helped reprogram a key for the vehicle and later arranged for it to be sold in South Carolina.
The Infiniti was reportedly sold for approximately $1,200.
Jackson has been charged with accessory after the fact to murder.
The vehicle was eventually located in South Carolina, roughly 140 miles from Charlotte.
That discovery provided investigators with another piece of the larger timeline they are building.
INVESTIGATION STILL CONTINUES
Although five arrests have now been announced, police say the investigation is not finished.
Authorities believe additional people may have information about what happened before, during or after the shooting.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Estella Patterson said investigators remain committed to identifying everyone responsible for the incident.
Police have also encouraged anyone with information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers.
For Caleb’s family, the arrests provide an important development, but they do not erase the loss of a young child who was simply at home with his family.
Community members have gathered to remember Caleb, with supporters describing him as a joyful child with a memorable smile.
A fundraiser has also been established to help his mother, who was raising Caleb as her only child. Organizers said the family is facing an extremely difficult period and that community support has been important to them.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The four teenagers now face the next stage of the legal process as adults.
The charges remain allegations, and each defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Investigators are continuing to examine the evidence surrounding the two vehicles, the firearms, phone data and statements from those arrested.
They are also working to establish the precise roles of the seven people believed to have been present when the shots were fired.
For now, the case has moved from an unanswered investigation to a much clearer criminal timeline.
Police say seven armed individuals arrived in two stolen vehicles, multiple homes were struck, an adult was seriously injured, and Caleb Flax was fatally wounded inside his home.
Four teenagers have now been charged in connection with the shooting, while a fifth suspect faces a separate allegation related to what happened afterward.
But investigators say their work is not over.
As the court proceedings begin and additional evidence is reviewed, more details could emerge about why the group went to the neighborhood that morning, who was involved in the decision to open fire and how each person allegedly contributed to the events.
For Caleb’s loved ones, the hope is that the continuing investigation will eventually provide a complete picture of what happened — while allowing the community to remember him for the short but meaningful life he shared with the people around him.
