The investigation surrounding Hayden Panettiere has taken a new turn, with federal authorities now focusing attention on Los Angeles and the possible source of prescription pills that investigators believe may have played a role in the actress’s final hours.
Panettiere, 36, was found unresponsive at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. Emergency responders attempted to revive her, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
At the time, authorities did not announce a confirmed cause or manner.
Now, nearly a month later, investigators are looking more closely at where the medications Panettiere may have obtained came from and whether one of the pills she took was counterfeit.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Drug Enforcement Administration agents and local investigators have been questioning people in Southern California as part of the investigation. Sources familiar with the case told the newspaper that authorities are examining whether Panettiere obtained nonprescription pills from a Los Angeles-area dealer, including pills described as counterfeit oxycodone.

That development does not mean investigators have reached a final conclusion.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has specifically said that the official cause and manner remain pending while toxicology testing and additional studies are completed. On September 14, the coroner’s office told FOX Carolina that it had not released any new findings and would issue information when the results were ready.
That distinction is important because several reports have pointed to a possible fentanyl-laced pill as a working theory among law enforcement sources.
According to TMZ, sources familiar with the investigation believe Panettiere may have taken a pill believed to be oxycodone that actually contained fentanyl. Authorities are reportedly trying to determine whether such a pill can be traced to a Los Angeles supplier.
But those reports remain unconfirmed by the coroner.
The toxicology results are still pending, meaning the precise substance or combination of substances involved has not been officially established.
Investigators are now looking beyond South Carolina
The investigation began in Greenville after emergency responders were called to the apartment complex where Panettiere had been staying.

Police and medical personnel found her in cardiac arrest. According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, advanced cardiac life-support measures were attempted, but she could not be revived.
A preliminary examination did not find trauma that would have contributed to what happened, while the official cause remained pending additional testing. Greenville police also said their initial investigation did not indicate signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
The investigation has since expanded beyond South Carolina.
Federal authorities have become involved, and investigators in Los Angeles are now examining the possibility that counterfeit medication obtained in California could be connected to what happened in Greenville.
PEOPLE previously reported that DEA agents had been involved in the investigation and that Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, had met with federal officials.
Investigators have also spoken with other people who may have information about Panettiere’s medications and the circumstances surrounding her final days.
A search at Panettiere’s Los Angeles home
Another significant development came from a federal search of Panettiere’s Los Angeles residence.
According to PEOPLE, DEA agents obtained a warrant and searched the home on August 25, nine days after Panettiere was found unresponsive in South Carolina.
The search was reportedly aimed at finding evidence related to possible illicit or black-market drugs.
That search adds another layer to the investigation because authorities are not simply trying to determine what Panettiere may have taken.

They are also trying to establish where the medication came from.
That could become particularly important if toxicology eventually identifies a substance that was not what Panettiere believed she had taken.
Counterfeit prescription pills have become a major concern for law enforcement because pills made to resemble legitimate medications can contain unexpected substances, including fentanyl.
For now, however, investigators have not publicly confirmed that a specific counterfeit pill caused Panettiere’s passing.
Brian Hickerson has also spoken with investigators
Hickerson, who was with Panettiere around the time emergency services were called, has also become part of the investigation because of his knowledge of the medications she was taking.
According to a police report obtained by PEOPLE, Hickerson showed an officer a bag containing medications that Panettiere had been taking.
PEOPLE also reported that he later met with federal officials as investigators worked to understand the circumstances surrounding the actress.
His attorney, Sloan Ellis, previously urged people not to draw conclusions while the investigation remained active.
The attorney said authorities had reported no signs of foul play and emphasized the importance of allowing investigators to complete their work.
There is currently no public indication that Hickerson has been charged in connection with the investigation.
What investigators are trying to establish
At this stage, several pieces of the investigation remain unresolved.
Authorities need to determine what substances Panettiere had taken, where those substances came from and whether any medication contained something different from what it was represented to be.
Investigators are also looking at the people who may have supplied the medications.
That is why the Los Angeles portion of the investigation has become increasingly important.
If investigators are able to identify a supplier and establish that a counterfeit medication was involved, the case could potentially develop beyond the circumstances surrounding Panettiere herself and toward the broader distribution of illicit prescription pills.
For now, however, that remains an investigative possibility rather than an established conclusion.
Panettiere’s representative asks for patience
As new reports have emerged, Panettiere’s representative has also addressed the growing speculation.
On September 16, the representative emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that toxicology results have not yet provided an official conclusion.
The statement also cautioned against relying on unverified reports and conflicting information circulating about the case.
That message comes at a time when several reports have cited unnamed law enforcement sources regarding the suspected pill and possible fentanyl involvement.
The difference between a working theory and an official finding is particularly important here.
Investigators may have a strong direction they are pursuing, but until toxicology and other evidence are completed, the exact circumstances cannot be stated with certainty.
A case still waiting for answers
Hayden Panettiere was known internationally for roles in Heroes and Nashville, and her sudden passing at 36 prompted widespread attention from fans and former colleagues.
But behind the headlines, investigators are now working through a much more specific set of questions.
What medication did Panettiere take?
Was it obtained legally or through an illicit source?
If a counterfeit pill was involved, where did it come from?
And if authorities identify a supplier, what evidence will connect that person to the medication?
Those questions are likely to remain central as the investigation continues.
For now, the official position remains unchanged: the Greenville County Coroner’s Office has not released a final cause or manner, and toxicology results are still pending.
The reports about a counterfeit oxycodone pill and possible fentanyl involvement come from sources familiar with the investigation, rather than from a completed official toxicology report.
That leaves the case at an important but unfinished stage.
Investigators in South Carolina are working alongside federal authorities and investigators in Los Angeles, while the focus increasingly turns toward the origin of the medications Panettiere may have taken.
Until the remaining forensic work is completed, the full picture remains uncertain.
And for those closest to Panettiere, the hope is that the investigation will eventually provide the clear answers that have so far remained out of reach.
