More than 19 years after Madeleine McCann disappeared from a holiday resort in Portugal, the investigation has received a new and unexpected development.
Christian Brueckner, the man German authorities have identified as the prime suspect in the case, has now publicly described where he says he was on the night the three-year-old British girl disappeared.
According to a recent interview reported by the Mail on Sunday, Brueckner claims he was on a beach in Praia da Luz, roughly 150 yards from the holiday apartment where Madeleine was staying with her family.
He says he was there selling drugs and trying to leave the area after police began searching the resort.
At the same time, Brueckner continues to deny having anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.
His account is significant because, until now, he had not publicly described his whereabouts that night in this level of detail.
Madeleine disappeared on May 3, 2007, while staying with her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, and her younger twin siblings at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal.
Her parents had been dining with friends at a nearby restaurant while the children remained in the family’s apartment.
When Madeleine could not be found later that evening, a major search began across the resort and surrounding area.
Nearly two decades later, the circumstances surrounding her disappearance remain unresolved.
Brueckner was living in the Algarve region around the time Madeleine vanished. German authorities named him as their prime suspect in 2020, saying they had evidence connecting him to the investigation.
Among the information investigators have previously examined is a mobile phone registered to Brueckner that was located in the area of the McCanns’ accommodation on the night Madeleine disappeared. German prosecutors have said they had concrete evidence pointing toward him, although no charge has been secured against him in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance.
Now, Brueckner is offering his own explanation for why he was in the area.
In the interview, he said he had traveled from Spain and brought marijuana into Portugal. He claimed he was selling the drugs on a beach near the resort.
He also said that police stopped him three times that evening while officers were searching for Madeleine.
According to Brueckner, he became concerned because he had a vehicle containing drugs and wanted to get away before police discovered them.
He described seeing flashing police lights and checkpoints around Praia da Luz and said his priority at the time was leaving the area.
That account places Brueckner remarkably close to the location where Madeleine disappeared — but it does not establish what happened to the child.
Brueckner insists that the two events are unrelated.
He has repeatedly denied involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance and says he believes authorities have attempted to connect him to the case unfairly.
His latest comments therefore create a new question for investigators: whether his account can be independently verified and how it fits with evidence already collected over the years.
The Metropolitan Police, which continues to support the UK investigation known as Operation Grange, has said detectives remain in contact with law-enforcement authorities in Germany and Portugal.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said the team would continue pursuing viable lines of inquiry.
The British investigation remains officially focused on Madeleine as a missing person.
At the same time, detectives have continued examining evidence connected to the possibility that she was abducted.
That distinction is important because Brueckner has never been charged in the Madeleine McCann case.
His status as a prime suspect also does not mean that a court has established that he was responsible for her disappearance.
The case has attracted renewed attention partly because of the timing of Brueckner’s new statements.
With the 20th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance approaching in 2027, investigators are continuing to work through evidence that has accumulated across nearly two decades.
Reports have also indicated that British investigators are working toward building a case file that could potentially be presented to prosecutors if sufficient evidence is established.
However, significant legal and evidentiary hurdles remain.
Brueckner is a German citizen, and reports have noted that German law creates restrictions on extraditing German nationals to countries outside the European Union. Any future attempt to bring him before a UK court would therefore involve additional legal questions.
For now, one of the most notable developments is simply that Brueckner has finally offered his own public account of that night.
He says he was close to the resort.
