The investigation into the sudden death of actress Hayden Panettiere has continued to develop in the weeks since she was found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina, with investigators still working to determine exactly what caused her death.
One of the earliest developments that drew public attention came just three days after Panettiere died, when police were seen at the South Carolina home belonging to the family of her longtime on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson.
The timing immediately raised questions.
But authorities have made an important distinction: the visit on August 19 was described by the Greenville Police Department as a welfare check, and officials said it was not connected to the investigation into Panettiere’s death. The call did not result in an incident report.
That distinction matters because the investigation surrounding Panettiere’s death remains active, while police have not publicly accused Hickerson of causing her death.
At the same time, investigators have continued examining the circumstances surrounding the actress’s final hours, including the medications reportedly found at the residence, the possibility of an overdose and the circumstances involving the people who were with her when she was found.
Police visit Brian Hickerson’s family home
On the morning of August 19, officers arrived at a home in Greenville connected to Hickerson’s family.
According to reports, police arrived at approximately 8:20 a.m. and knocked at the residence. No one answered, and officers left after a short period of time.
The visit came only three days after Panettiere’s death.
Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach had been at the Greenville residence where Panettiere was found unresponsive on August 16. Zach was the person who discovered her, while Brian was reportedly asleep in another room at the time.
Because of that connection, images of officers arriving at Hickerson’s family home naturally attracted attention.
But the Greenville Police Department said the welfare check was not related to Panettiere’s death investigation. Authorities also said the visit did not require a police report.
That means the police presence at the house should not be presented as a search of Hickerson’s home or as evidence that he was suspected of killing Panettiere.
The larger death investigation, however, was continuing.
What happened on August 16
Panettiere, known for roles in Heroes and Nashville, was 36 years old when she died.
Greenville police responded to a report of an unresponsive woman at Judson Mill in Greenville shortly before 2 p.m. on August 16.
Emergency personnel found Panettiere in cardiac arrest and attempted lifesaving measures. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dispatch audio referenced a possible overdose, but that did not establish an official cause of death.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that an autopsy had been completed and found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.
The coroner said the cause and manner of death remained pending additional studies and investigation.
That remains one of the most important facts in the case.
An autopsy finding of no contributing trauma does not, by itself, establish that Panettiere died from an overdose. Toxicology and other investigative findings are needed before authorities can make a final determination.
Brian Hickerson was at the residence
Police records have provided more information about what happened when Panettiere was found.
Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were present at the residence.
According to the incident report, Zach was described as highly emotional while emergency responders attempted to revive Panettiere.
The report also states that Brian spoke with police after Panettiere had been pronounced dead.
One detail investigators documented was that Hickerson showed an officer a bag of medication that Panettiere had reportedly been taking.
The report also indicated that surveillance footage showed Panettiere, Brian and Zach coming and going from the location.
Those details have become part of the broader investigation into what happened before emergency services arrived.
However, they do not establish who, if anyone, was responsible for her death.
The investigation has expanded beyond local police
The case took another significant turn when the Drug Enforcement Administration became involved.
A source told PEOPLE that the DEA had joined the investigation as authorities continued trying to determine whether drugs played a role in Panettiere’s death. At that point, however, her official cause of death had still not been released.
The DEA’s involvement has naturally generated speculation, particularly because dispatch information mentioned a possible overdose and Narcan was reportedly found at the scene.
But the presence of federal drug investigators does not mean authorities have announced that Panettiere died from fentanyl or that someone has been charged in connection with her death.
Those conclusions would require evidence from toxicology and the larger investigation.
Legal experts quoted by PEOPLE noted that investigators could examine toxicology results, communications, phone records and witness interviews when determining whether a criminal case is warranted.
For now, the official cause and manner of death remain unresolved.
Federal agents reportedly searched Panettiere’s Los Angeles home
Another major development came later in August.
On August 25, more than six federal agents reportedly entered Panettiere’s West Hollywood residence with a search warrant, according to a witness cited in subsequent reports.
The reported search occurred nine days after her death and as the DEA’s involvement in the investigation had already become public.
The reported search adds another layer to the investigation, but authorities have not publicly disclosed everything investigators were looking for or what, if anything, was recovered.
Entertainment Weekly also reported that the FBI’s Los Angeles office was unaware of such an operation when contacted, making it important not to automatically describe the search as an FBI raid.
What can be established is that a reported federal search occurred at Panettiere’s West Hollywood home while the death investigation was still active.
The significance of anything recovered there has not been publicly established.
Why Brian Hickerson remains under intense scrutiny
Much of the public attention surrounding Hickerson comes from his long and troubled history with Panettiere.
The two began their relationship in 2018, and their relationship later became associated with multiple domestic-violence incidents.
Hickerson was arrested several times in connection with allegations involving Panettiere. In 2021, he pleaded no contest to two felony counts involving injury to a spouse or partner and received a sentence that included jail time, probation, domestic-violence classes and a protective order.
Panettiere later spoke publicly about the relationship and its impact on her life.
Her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, also revisited some of the abuse and personal struggles she experienced during that period.
That history has inevitably caused people to question Hickerson’s presence when Panettiere died.
But the history itself is not proof that he caused her death.
As of the latest publicly reported developments, authorities have not announced that Hickerson has been charged with homicide or publicly accused him of causing Panettiere’s death.
His attorney has also urged people to allow the investigation to proceed rather than drawing conclusions before authorities release their findings.
New questions surrounding Hickerson’s actions
Additional reporting has since brought more attention to Hickerson’s behavior before Panettiere’s death.
Page Six reported that private Instagram and text messages reviewed by the publication showed Hickerson pursuing another woman months before Panettiere died.
The woman, who requested anonymity, said she met Hickerson at a Greenville nightclub in March. According to the report, their subsequent messages included romantic advances and invitations to meet.
Those messages do not establish a connection to Panettiere’s death.
They are relevant only as part of the broader picture surrounding Hickerson’s personal life before August 16.
That distinction is especially important in a developing death investigation, where unrelated or unproven details can easily become mistaken for evidence.
His previous legal and substance-abuse history is also being revisited
Reports have also resurfaced an August 2025 incident involving Hickerson in Los Angeles.
According to Page Six, he was arrested after an incident at Barney’s Beanery in West Hollywood in which he was reportedly found barefoot and hiding under a table after a disturbance. A later arrest involved suspected substance use, and that case was eventually dismissed after he completed a diversion program and attended Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
Again, those events occurred before Panettiere’s death and do not establish a connection between those incidents and what happened in Greenville.
They have nevertheless received renewed attention because of the ongoing investigation and Hickerson’s known history with substance abuse.
Panettiere’s family has raised concerns
Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, has publicly expressed concern about Hickerson’s involvement in her daughter’s life.
Speaking to NBC News, Vogel said the family had been trying to distance Hickerson from Panettiere and alleged that he had enabled some of her struggles.
Those are statements from Panettiere’s mother and should be understood as such, rather than established findings by investigators.
Panettiere had also been open about her own struggles with addiction and other personal difficulties.
In her memoir, released only months before her death, she described years of substance-abuse problems and treatment.
That history is relevant to understanding why investigators are examining the possibility of an overdose, but it still does not answer the central question of what caused her death on August 16.
Toxicology remains critical
The most important missing piece may still be the toxicology results.
An autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to Panettiere’s death, but the coroner said the cause and manner remained pending additional studies.
That means investigators still need laboratory results before the circumstances of her death can be formally determined.
Until those findings are released, several possibilities remain open.
A suspected overdose is not the same as a confirmed overdose.
The presence of medication is not, by itself, proof that medication caused her death.
And the presence of another person at the scene does not establish criminal responsibility.

The more consequential developments came afterward — the continued investigation, the DEA’s reported involvement and the reported federal search of Panettiere’s home.
Those developments do not yet provide a final answer.
