Steve Goncalves, the father of Kaylee Goncalves, one of the four University of Idaho students killed in November 2022, recently shared his perspective with NewsNation’s Jesse Weber Live regarding Bryan Kohberger’s reported effort to withdraw his guilty plea.
Kohberger had previously pleaded guilty to the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. He received four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. In recent statements released through his family, Kohberger has indicated that he wishes to challenge the plea, describing the earlier proceedings as incomplete and claiming that the decision was influenced by inaccurate information. Under Idaho law, he is pursuing post-conviction relief that could potentially allow the plea to be set aside if a court finds that a clear injustice occurred.

Goncalves told NewsNation that his family was not surprised by the development. He stated that if the case were to return to trial, he would welcome the opportunity to see the matter fully examined in court once more. He described it as a chance to hold the defendant accountable through a complete legal process.
At the same time, Goncalves expressed concern for the broader impact on the local community. He noted that the prolonged legal proceedings have already placed significant emotional and financial strain on residents of Idaho, particularly since Kohberger was not from the state. While personally open to a retrial, he emphasized the importance of considering the community’s well-being and the substantial costs that another extended court process would involve.

Goncalves also shared his view that Kohberger’s actions appear driven by a self-centered personality. He added that prison conditions tend to become more challenging over time and that the defendant will eventually face the same realities as other inmates.
As of the latest available reporting in late July 2026, Kohberger’s request to withdraw his plea remains under legal review. No final court decision has been issued on whether a retrial will be permitted.
