Jonathan “JJ” Vasquez Jr. was simply taking a break from his first job when a confrontation outside a California restaurant suddenly changed the course of his life.
Nearly one month later, his family is sharing a difficult update about his recovery — while holding firmly onto hope for the young man they describe as hardworking, positive and determined.
JJ was working at a Five Guys restaurant on Portico Way in Oxnard on the evening of August 28 when an altercation broke out outside the business.
According to the Oxnard Police Department, the confrontation involved a 16-year-old boy and two other males. During the incident, a single round was fired.
JJ was inside the restaurant at the time, on his break.
Investigators say he was not the intended target.
The round passed through the restaurant’s glass door and struck JJ in the spine, leaving him with a serious injury. Police said he was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
The investigation moved quickly.
Authorities identified a 16-year-old Oxnard resident as the suspect and obtained a search warrant for a home on East First Street.
Members of the Oxnard Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit, along with SWAT and K-9 officers, later arrested the teenager as he left the residence.
He was booked into the Ventura County Juvenile Justice Center on suspicion of attempted murder.
Because the suspect is a minor, authorities have not publicly released his name.
Police have also said that the reason for the confrontation remains unknown, and the two other people involved have not been publicly identified.
For JJ’s family, however, the investigation is only one part of a much larger story.
The 18-year-old had recently graduated from high school, where he served as captain of his football team. He had just started his first job while attending Ventura College and was also preparing to participate in track as a thrower.

She told NBC Los Angeles that doctors have informed the family that JJ is not expected to walk again.
