A routine trip home from work took a tragic turn for 29-year-old Kyle Bickham after investigators say he was pushed from a moving CTA Red Line train during a confrontation on Chicago’s South Side.
Four days later, police arrested a 15-year-old girl in connection with the incident, adding a major new development to an investigation that is still raising questions about what happened inside the train.
Because the suspect is a minor, authorities have not publicly identified her.
The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, September 7, near the 69th Street Red Line station. Bickham had reportedly been traveling home to Lansing after finishing a shift at an Amazon warehouse in Cicero.
At some point during the trip, he became involved in a confrontation with three people, according to police.
Investigators initially believed Bickham may have jumped from the moving train. As detectives gathered more information, however, authorities said the circumstances appeared to be very different.
Police now allege that Bickham was pushed from the train during an altercation.
He fell onto the electrified third rail and was subsequently struck by another train.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled the incident a homicide, according to local reports.
The investigation then moved quickly.
On Friday, September 11, Chicago police announced that a 15-year-old girl had been taken into custody. Authorities say she was one of three people involved in the confrontation.
The teenager faces several serious felony allegations, including first-degree murder, murder by other forcible felony, mob action and aggravated battery involving a transit passenger or employee.
Because the case involves a juvenile, many details that would normally be available in an adult criminal proceeding have not been publicly released.
She appeared in juvenile court following her arrest. Prosecutors presented evidence supporting the charges, and the court ordered her to remain in custody while the case proceeds.
She is scheduled to return to court on September 14.
