Now the father of one of the young men who was with Wells that day has spoken out in unusually strong terms against the high-profile civil rights attorney representing the Wells family.
Ben Hudson, a 56-year-old addiction-medicine physician and father of six, is the parent of 19-year-old Warren Hudson. Warren has publicly described Nolan as his best friend and was among the group of friends who traveled to the barrier island roughly ten miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. In an exclusive interview, Ben Hudson accused attorney Ben Crump of exploiting the tragedy for fundraising and political purposes rather than pursuing an objective search for answers.
“In my opinion, truth is not Ben Crump’s concern,” Hudson said. “He’s exploiting the situation and raising money. I think this is financially exploiting this entire tragedy and making it a much bigger tragedy at the expense of my family and our community and the Wells family.”
Hudson further claimed that Crump has advanced what he calls a false narrative that effectively paints his son and the other young people present that day as responsible for Wells’ death. He announced that his family intends to pursue defamation and slander claims against Crump and predicted that other families connected to the outing may follow suit.
The criticism extended beyond Crump. Hudson also took issue with the involvement of the Rev. Al Sharpton, whose National Action Network has supported the Wells family. He linked that involvement to the approaching midterm election cycle and described the July 20 funeral—officiated by Sharpton—as having been turned into a political event. At the service, mourners were led in chants of “Justice for Nolan Wells” and “Nolan’s life matters,” and a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction was announced. That reward later grew to approximately $125,000 with contributions from public figures including NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and filmmaker Tyler Perry. Hudson’s own family has separately offered a $50,000 reward for truthful information.
Hudson said the atmosphere surrounding the case has already exacted a heavy personal cost. His family reports receiving thousands of hostile messages and what he described as credible death threats. One message allegedly included a photograph of his wife’s mother, Jackson County chancery court judge Ashlee Cole, accompanied by the words “I hope you all die.” On the day of the funeral itself, Hudson, his wife, and their son Warren received formal letters from attorney Gary Bufkin—also representing the Wells parents—warning that litigation was “reasonably anticipated” and instructing them to preserve any potential evidence.
In response, Crump dismissed the threatened lawsuit as a distraction. Speaking at a press conference, he stated that the family’s focus remains solely on uncovering the truth and that no steps beyond asking necessary questions have been taken. Sharpton likewise rejected the characterization of the funeral as political, denied that the reward constituted a “bounty,” and said he had not even known Warren Hudson’s name until contacted by reporters. He further argued that any suggestion of a connection to midterm politics was unfounded.
The broader investigation remains active. Authorities have treated the death as a suspected drowning pending the final medical examiner’s findings, while the Wells family has retained independent experts, issued subpoenas to major social-media platforms over concerns about deleted content and location data, and continued to press for greater transparency.
