On a busy summer Saturday at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, a routine day quickly turned into a life-or-death struggle against the ocean. Powerful 8-to-10-foot waves were rolling in, catching many beachgoers off guard. From his post in Tower 2, 16-year-old rookie lifeguard Ryder Williams spotted the danger almost immediately. Instead, he focused all his energy on maintaining his position and preventing both of them from being dragged even deeper into the Pacific. “I was unable to pull him out because he was limp and the waves were pushing so hard,” he explained. “The whole time I was thinking, I just need to hold my position until my partner can get here because I’m not going to be able to get him out on my own.”
Several bystanders jumped into the water in an attempt to help, but Williams urgently ordered them back to shore for their own safety. Moments later, a second lifeguard arrived. By then Williams’ arms were exhausted from the constant struggle against the surf. His partner took primary control of holding Nathaniel while Williams continued to support them as they fought their way back through the waves. Together they managed to drag the boy onto the sand.
Once on the beach, Nathaniel coughed up sand and remained in a state of shock. His father, Sumit Rai, later described the narrow margin by which his son was saved. “Gratefully, he’s alive. It’s a miracle,” Rai said. “I’m so grateful to that lifeguard, Ryder. Two more seconds he gets thrown another 15-20 feet. You can’t see him, let alone rescue him.” Nathaniel himself told his father that he had drowned and briefly gone unconscious.
After the intense rescue, Williams did not take a break. He returned to his tower, continued monitoring the water, and even carried out additional rescues later that same day. Looking back on the experience, he emphasized that such saves are a team effort involving multiple lifeguards and units working together. He also expressed a clear hope that the attention surrounding the incident would encourage more people to respect the ocean’s power.
“I wish more people knew about ocean conditions and rip currents,” Williams said. “A way that people can find out about those is talking to the lifeguards or doing some research before they head to the beach.” He added that lifeguards along the California coast and around the world perform thousands of rescues every day, and that this is simply the job they are trained to do.
The dramatic video of the rescue, captured by a bystander, spread rapidly online and drew widespread praise. President Trump publicly recognized Williams’ bravery and indicated that the young lifeguard would receive a high civilian honor, with reports suggesting a possible invitation to the White House.
Williams, who is still in his first season as a lifeguard, remains grounded about the experience. He describes the work as deeply rewarding and says it has only strengthened his commitment to helping people stay safe at the beach.
